The favorites for this upcoming La Liga season do not come as a surprise, as they are always the same favorites every season. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid are expected to battle it out for the crown of Spain this season. Whether the Catalan giants will retain their title or if an opposition club snatches the title from Barcelona remains to be seen.
Barcelona hoping to be back to back champions
The first title contenders are Barcelona, and it would almost seem absurd to make this list without including them. The Catalan giants claimed every domestic trophy last season but will once again be turning their attention to La Liga. Last season, Barcelona’s style of play was nothing short of scintillating, as they managed to return to the pinnacle of football. The Catalans’ quick combination passes and direct play often blew fans away, as their philosophy led to many goalscoring opportunities. The Blaugrana will be hoping to build on what they did and have an even more dominant season. However, their main downfall could be their high line, which saw them concede many goals as opponents continuously ran in behind their backline.
Los Rojiblancos seeking their first title in four years
Atletico may not have the individual firepower that Real Madrid and Barcelona boast, but they are certainly not a team any top club fancies to play against. Boosted by the new additions of Almada, Cardoso, Baena, and Ruggeri, Atletico will be keen to go for the title once again. Atletico’s main issue, which has been seen over the past few seasons, will be their endurance, especially when it comes to the latter stages of the season. We have seen Atletico fall apart countless times towards the end of the season, which is why their new improved squad depth is something to watch out for. On the bright side, Simeone’s low block is capable of keeping out any opposition on their day, and that will be one of the strengths they lean on. Atletico is also capable of lightning-speed transitions from defense to attack, which has seen them trouble defenses in recent years.
Can Real Madrid redeem themselves after a poor season
Despite coming in second, Real Madrid had a season to forget. Their defense was uncoordinated, their midfield got run through, and their midfield could not connect with the attack.
