Ousmane Dembele wins Ballon d’Or award over Lamine Yamal
With thirty nominees for the Men’s Ballon d’Or award, the last two names in contention at the end of the night were PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé and FC Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. After much debate, Dembélé won the prestigious award following a successful season, scoring 35 goals, providing 14 assists, and leading PSG to a domestic treble. The Champions League was a driving point for the winger as he led PSG to their first major European trophy. It was an emotional night for the Frenchman as he was tearing up during his speech as he thanked his family and his former clubs.
Aitana Bonmatí Completes Her Hat Trick
It was a night of history for Aitana Bonmati as she won her third consecutive Ballon d’Or. The Spanish midfielder became the first woman to win three Ballon d’Or trophies. At club level, Bonmati had 15 goals and 12 assists across 44 games, leading FC Barcelona to the Champions League final while being named the UEFA Women’s Champions League Player of the Season.
For Spain, she was an integral part to them making the Euros final and was named the UEFA Women’s Championship Player of the Tournament.
Lamine Yamal wins back-to-back Kopa trophies
The Kopa Trophy is an award given to the best player under the age of 21. For the second consecutive season, Lamine Yamal was honored with this award, beating out PSG’s Désiré Doué and João Neves. With Yamal projected to be a top contender for the main Ballon d’Or award, it was certain heading into the ceremony that the FC Barcelona winger would win the Kopa Trophy.
