Which top contender will go all the way in Africa’s most glittering competition

Who will claim Africa’s most prestigious competition

With AFCON already underway, we take a look at the top three contenders who could go all the way in Morocco. The likes of Nigeria, Morocco, and Senegal are all seen as the favorites to go all the way and lift the continent’s most prestigious prize. All these sides began with victories to open their campaign and are already one step closer to securing knockout qualification. During this discussion, which gives each contender the edge over the other, as well as which individual players could be key in helping them go all the way.

Morocco looking to capitalize on their home soil advantage

Marruecos

Considering the Atlas Lions are playing in front of their home supporters, you cannot help but feel that this may just be their tournament. Morocco will be seeking their first title since 1976 when they defeated Guinea. The hosts arguably have the best squad on paper, but have also proven quality on the pitch making them a side any team would dread facing. The Atlas Lions will also be heavily boosted by the return of Achraf Hakimi, who made it to the squad list after being sidelined for months. Brahim Diaz’s inclusion in the side also strengthens the hosts, with the Spanish-born attacking midfielder making his first international appearance for Morocco since switching. Diaz managed to find the net in the first opening three games for the hosts, putting in a solid display and showing glimpses of his brilliance.

Super Eagles looking to bounce back after a disappointing 18 months

Oshimen Nigeria

The Super Eagles, led by Osimhen, will be keen to get their hands on AFCON once again, ending their 12-year drought since they last won the trophy. Last time around, Nigerian hearts were broken after allowing Ivory Coast back in the game, which saw them concede the title to the Elephants. The African Giants also fell short to DR Congo on penalties in the CAF Qualifiers, which saw them fail to secure a World Cup place. Nigeria’s tendency to underperform at the big stage in recent years has had many spectators questioning their ability to go all the way. Despite numerous doubts circling around this Nigeria side, nobody can question the quality they have going forward. The likes of Osimhen, Lookman, and Chukwueze will be looking to fire on all cylinders should Nigeria claim their long-awaited AFCON title.

Senegal must never be left out of the conversation when looking who could conquer Africa

Senegal Copa Africana de Naciones

Last but certainly not least, one cannot have a conversation about AFCON contenders without talking about Senegal. The Lions of Teranga will be looking to bounce back after an early exit to Ivory Coast on penalties. A Senegalese side led by Sadio Mane will be keen on becoming champions of Africa for the first time. The 2021 AFCON champions secured a comfortable 3-0 over Botswana to kickstart their quest for their second title. The Lions of Teranga will also be heavily boosted by the form of Ilmian Ndiaye, who has recently emerged onto the world stage as one of Africa’s most promising attackers. Senegalese attacking midfielder has managed to register six goal contributions in 16 appearances so far this season.
