Dominican Republic made history in Concacaf

Dominican Republic stunned Guatemala to edge the Central Americans on penalty kicks by 4 to 2. This victory will take them to the final and they will take part in the Paris Olympics in 2024.

This result was at the semifinals of te U20 Concacaf 2022 Championship in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Dominican Republic were relying on Angel Montes de Oca to carry Los Quisqueyanos past Guatemala as he guided them past Jamaica and El Salvador.

The key player for Guatemala going into this match was Jorge Moreno who had an amazing display against Mexico saving three penalty kicks in the shootout with El Tri.

Guatemala ended up taking the lead from a header by Arquimidez Ordonez. Arquimidez Ordonez then added to his header earlier by having his cross deflected into the Dominican Republic net.

This had left Dominican Republic with a mountain to climb for them to win the match as they were two goals down before half-time.

Then as the match approached the hour mark Dominican Republic managed to get life out of nowhere and get back into the match after scoring in 62nd and 64th minute.

Then the match reached penalty shootouts where Dominican Republic had edged Guatemala 4 goals to 2 goals from the spot.

This victory meant that they will face the United States of America in the final.

It also meant that Dominican Republic wrote their names in U-20 soccer history by securing a spot in the Olympics in 2024 for the first time in their history while also securing a place in U-20 World Cup in Indonesia next year.

For Dominican Republic they must now shift their focus to their fixture against the United States.
