World Cup debut for Smith

World Cup champions off to a flier

World Cup Group E went under way as USMNT took on Vietnam at Eden Park in Auckland. The Defending Champions got their campaign off to a flying start with a 3-0 victory over Vietnam. Sophie Smith scored a brace as USMNT got all the three points against Vietnam. World Cup debutants simply did not have the answer for the USMNT’s brilliance. Futbol Mundial brings you the best moments from USMNT vs Vietnam.

Dominant USMNT start their campaign on a high

Sophie Smith could not have asked for a better World Cup debut as she scored a brace to give USMNT the victory. Smith got her first goal after a brilliant flick from Morgan to give Smith the lead. The United States are unbeaten against any Asian opposition in the last 16 games with 12 wins and 4 draws. Morgan then missed a penalty on the verge of halftime. Smith had a goal ruled out however it was overturned as she got her second. Lindsey Horan then rounded off the game by adding a third to complete a comfortable victory. The USMNT still face remaining games against Portugal and then a World Cup final rematch against Netherlands. Arguably their toughest test will be against Holland who will be seeking redemption against them

World Cup debutants outclassed

Vietnam fell short on their debut against USMNT. It is becoming increasingly unlikely to qualify for the next round as they still have to face Netherlands and Portugal. Vietnam qualified for the World Cup through their heroics against Chinese Taipei. Vietnam failed to register a single strike in the match that saw them get completely dominated in all areas. The score could have been a lot worse but Thi Kim Tran saved a penalty from USMNT star Alex Morgan.
