USWNT saved by the post

USWNT qualify by the skin of their teeth

USWNT took on Portugal at Eden Park in Auckland. The four time World Cup winners were held to a 0-0 draw against the Portuguese. It saw Portugal get eliminated in a very heartbreaking way as they were just two points from qualification. However USWNT managed to hold their nerve and qualify for the knockout stage yet again. The scoreline of this game does not tell the whole story as it was far more entertaining than it seemed. Futbol Mundial brings you the best moments from Portugal vs USWNT.

Portugal unlucky to have come away with draw

Portugal saw their dream of reaching World Cup last 16 falter as they are knocked out in the group stage. The World Cup debutants had a chance to take the lead in the 15th minute as Jessica Silva was one on one with Naeher but struck wide. Portugal got another chance in the 38th minute Francisca Nazareth’s effort sailed over the bar. Ana Capeta could have won the game against USWNT but struck the post in injury time which was arguably the best chance of the game. At the end it was USWNT who progressed but Capeta will not stop thinking about that chance she missed.

Sweden next for USA

USWNT will be counting their lucky stars that they are still in this World Cup. However they will be disappointed that they never came first in their group as they were tipped to do so. USWNT had the chance to take the lead after Williams headed Smith’s cross into the arms of Pereira. Williams had another golden chance but struck the ball wide after her original strike rebounded of the keeper. Alex Morgan then went around the keeper but her effort was cleared off the line. USWNT’s team’s blushes were spared after Portugal nearly knocked them out with Capeta’a strike.
