Club America manage to rise back to the pinnacle of Mexican football. They managed to edge Tigres UANL comfortably after an evenly matched first leg. They managed to win their first title since 2018 where they had defeated Cruz Azul after defeating them 2-0 thanks to a brace from Edson Alvarez. Tigres UANL and Club America shared the spoils in the first leg. Henry Martin had given them the lead through a penalty six minutes into the second half. Then twenty minutes later Ozziel Herrera equalized to give Los Tigres hope of winning their first title since the 2017-18 season. Tigres UANL also wanted to redeem themselves after losing to Pachuca last season. Club America had gone into the playoffs leading just like they had the previous season. However this time they had only one objective in mind and that was to win Apertura.
Club America would then go on to crush Tigres UANL in the second leg. After failing to break the deadlock over 90 minutes Quinones broke the deadlock in the first minute of extra time. Then as the first half of extra time was coming to a conclusion Richard Sanchez doubled the lead for the Aguilas. With a 2 goal lead Club America were in the driving seat. Jonathan Rodriguez then put the contest to bed after making it 3-0 and that proved to be the dagger in Los Tigres’s hearts. Despite Club America ending their drought to win Apertura the wait goes on for Tigres UANL to lift since the 2019-20 season.
