With Real Madrid preparing for the new season here is what must change

With the campaign on the horizon how will Los Blancos tackle their issues

Xabi Alonso: "Con Zidane todo el mundo tiene mucha ilusión"

With the European season underway for Real Madrid, it is important to identify several areas that the European heavyweights need to improve ahead of the new season. Insights gained from Los Blancos’ performances in the Club World Cup and the previous European season highlight the necessity for strategic enhancements. If Real Madrid aims to achieve both domestic and global success, they must elevate their game next season.

Will Alonso be scared to drop his star men ?

The first issue they need to address is the pressing strategy involving frontmen like Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr. Alonso’s style of play, previously seen at Bayer Leverkusen, emphasizes intense pressing to suffocate opposition teams, limiting their space and increasing chances for ball recovery. This approach led Leverkusen to become the first club in Bundesliga history to go undefeated throughout an entire season. By getting Mbappé and Vinícius Jr. to tuck in, Madrid can restrict teams in their own half, forcing mistakes that can lead to goal-scoring opportunities. Alonso may need to make bold decisions, potentially including the prospect of dropping Mbappé or Vinícius if they do not fully commit to his system.

Could Rodri be the answer to Real Madrid’s problems

The second issue that needs resolution is the acquisition of a controlling midfielder who can dictate play. The leading candidate for this role is Rodri. He has demonstrated the ability to control the tempo of games, recover lost balls, and execute accurate passes that break defensive lines, making him an ideal fit for Real Madrid’s needs. Although Xabi Alonso experimented with placing Arda Güler in that role, the Turkish youngster has yet to prove he possesses all the necessary attributes to function as a controlling midfielder, especially against top teams that maintain possession and create numerous goal-scoring opportunities. While Güler’s creativity is valuable, it is not the sole requirement for this position.

With Huijsen leading Madrid’s backline can they be more solid

The third and final issue that could hinder their progress is their defense. Although not as critical as the previous two concerns, Real Madrid must better organize their backline and ensure they maintain their shape. It is crucial for defenders to be well-positioned when forward players are attacking to prevent potential goal opportunities. The number of cheap goals conceded by Real Madrid last year was unacceptable. To rectify this, they need to establish solidity at the back. They have already begun to bring in reinforcements for their defense; now, the focus must be on ensuring that players understand their positions and defend cohesively as a unit.
