AC Milan have made their first major signing of the transfer window, after announcing the signing of PSG striker Goncalo Ramos. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the transfer fee for the Portuguese striker is 74 million euros plus potential add-ons.

This transfer marks the most expensive transfer in Serie A since Inter signed Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United for €74 million in 2019. This fee also surpasses AC Milan’s previous club record, the €50m paid to Lille for Rafael Leao that same year.

The big money transfer shows significant initiative from an AC Milan side that has struggled to compete in the Serie A since their last league title in the 2021-22 season. The discussion then shifts towards Ramos’ role over the past few seasons.

After signing from Benfica in August 2023, Ramos has spent the better part of the last three seasons playing off the bench — similar to his role with the Portuguese national team. The question becomes: Can AC Milan depend on a striker who has not been a consistent starter since the 2022-23 season?

Ramos broke onto the scene with Benfica, scoring 41 goals in 106 games across three seasons for the club. It was this stint that earned him a reported €65 million transfer to PSG. While playing behind many great attackers, Ramos scored 45 goals in 131 games for the French giants

Now, with a big move to the Serie A, Ramos will have to prove that he is capable of leading the line and being the primary goalscorer for a side looking to compete for the title.
