Rafael Márquez’s new era as head coach of the Mexican national team began with a draw. El Tricolor tied Colombia 1-1 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, in a match where Mexico had some strong moments, especially in the first half, though it once again ran into an old problem: a lack of finishing.
The star of the night was Gilberto Mora, who made his debut wearing the No. 10 jersey and scored his first goal for the senior national team to breathe new life into the Mexican squad.
Colombia Struck First
Mexico started by trying to take the initiative and created some dangerous chances, but Colombia capitalized on one of its early attacks.
In the 9th minute, Richard Ríos sent in a precise cross that found Luis Suárez, who popped up to connect with a header and put the Colombian team up 1-0.
The goal caused Mexico to lose control of the match at times. Colombia took center stage, and the team coached by Márquez struggled to regain the rhythm it had shown in the opening minutes.
Even so, the Tricolor had clear chances before halftime. The goalposts played a key role after two Mexican shots that came very close to finding the back of the net.
Gilberto Mora Steps Up as Number 10
Just when it seemed like the Mexican goal simply wouldn’t come, Gilberto Mora stepped up.
The young player received the ball and made a great individual play inside the Colombian penalty area. With a cutback, he managed to shake off his marker and then finished past goalkeeper Álvaro Montero to tie the score at 1-1.
The goal came in the 62nd minute and marked Mora’s first goal with the Mexican senior national team, making it a special night as he wore the number 10 jersey for the first time.
At just 17 years old, the Xolos player once again demonstrated why he is one of the young stars generating the most excitement around the Tricolor.
Isaías Violante also made his debut
Another highlight was Isaías Violante’s debut with the Mexican national team.
The player saw only a few minutes of action on the field but managed to show some flashes of brilliance during his first appearance with the national team.
After the tie, Mexico regained confidence and sought to capitalize on the momentum to stage a comeback. However, Colombia also had opportunities, and the score remained unchanged.
The closing minutes were particularly intense. In stoppage time, players from both teams were involved in a shoving match in midfield, heightening the tension in a match that ended in a draw.
When does Mexico play next?
The Mexican national team’s next match will be against Peru on September 29, again as part of this international friendly window.
The Peruvian team will arrive after a 4-0 loss to the United States, so the match will allow Rafael Márquez to continue testing players and shaping his vision at the helm of the Tricolor.
After a draw in their debut, all eyes will now be on whether Mexico can turn the promising performance against Colombia into a victory.
