World Soccer.—Chivas had an afternoon to forget at AKRON Stadium. Guadalajara fell 0-2 to Querétaro in a match they started off dominating but that ended marked by individual errors, a lack of decisiveness, and the desperation of a team that couldn’t find a way to bounce back.
The loss marked the second defeat of the season for the team coached by Gabriel Milito and ended an eight-game unbeaten streak. Additionally, Guadalajara went into its second consecutive match without a win just before the FIFA break.
One Mistake Changes Everything for Chivas
Guadalajara started with initiative, possession, and a high defensive line. Everything seemed to indicate that the red-and-white team was in control of the match, until a mistake opened the door for Querétaro.
Luis Romo lost the ball under pressure from Enzo Giménez, who capitalized on the mistake to set up Alí Ávila. The forward found himself in front of the goal and beat Óscar Whalley to make it 0-1.
The goal sparked an immediate reaction in the stands. While the Gallos Blancos players celebrated, some of the red-and-white fans began booing Romo.
The player raised his hand in apology and appeared visibly shaken by the error for some time. But Chivas’s troubles were just beginning.
The Guadalajara team began to pile up mistakes, and even Óscar Whalley had some unfortunate moments—first on a rush out of the goal and then when he failed to secure the ball after a corner kick.
The pressure mounted, and desperation began to take hold of the team.
Guillermo Allison Becomes the Hero
In the second half, Chivas came out determined to find the equalizer, but they ran into a wall named Guillermo Allison.
The Querétaro goalkeeper made saves on mid-range shots by Luis Romo and Kevin Castañeda, as well as stopping a shot by Ricardo Marín.
Chivas dominated possession, controlled the ball, and sought the equalizer through various means, but could not find a way to break through the Querétaro defense.
Gallos Blancos, meanwhile, waited for their chance.
Querétaro Seals the Deal
The decisive blow came on a counterattack. Once again, Enzo Giménez took center stage by setting up Mateo Coronel, who arrived to tap the ball into the back of the net and make it 0-2.
The AKRON Stadium fell practically silent.
Querétaro didn’t need to dominate the match to do damage. The Gallos Blancos took advantage of Chivas’ mistakes, were clinical in front of the goal, and found the exact moments to strike.
The afternoon took a turn for the worse when Omar Govea was sent off after a hard tackle on Santiago Homenchenko. The midfielder will miss Guadalajara’s next match—against Atlas, of all teams.
Chivas will have to bounce back in the Clásico Tapatío
The loss ended an eight-game unbeaten streak and left Chivas with plenty to fix during the FIFA break.
Now Guadalajara will have time to address its mistakes and prepare for its next match—none other than the Clásico Tapatío against Atlas.
After an afternoon in which everything went wrong, Chivas will have to quickly find a way to regain their confidence and get back to winning ways.
