Club Puebla salvaged a draw that felt like a victory thanks to a truly spectacular goal by Eduardo Armenta, who stepped up in the final minutes to seal the 1-1 tie against León in their Matchday 11 clash of the 2026 Liga MX Apertura.

In a match marked by rain and missed opportunities by the Esmeraldas, the Puebla midfielder stole the show with a spectacular volley that found the top corner and left the opposing goalkeeper with no chance.

Before that moment of brilliance, León had taken the lead with a goal by Panamanian Ismael Díaz. However, just when it seemed the visitors would take home the three points, Armenta stepped up in the 87th minute to rescue La Franja.

With this result, Puebla reached 15 points, the product of four wins, three draws, and four losses. León, for its part, reached 18 points and let slip an opportunity to add another victory.

León struck first at Cuauhtémoc Stadium

In the rain and in front of 7,988 fans at Cuauhtémoc Stadium, Puebla tried to take the initiative from the opening minutes.

In the 8th minute, Alejandro Organista came close to opening the scoring with a header off a cross from Brayan Garnica, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Five minutes later, the midfielder appeared in the box again, though his shot also missed the target.

León responded with a powerful shot by Díber Cambindo in the 18th minute. The Puebla defense managed to clear the ball, and on the follow-up, Edgar Guerra was denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Ricardo Gutiérrez.

As the first half was drawing to a close, the Esmeraldas were rewarded for their efforts. In the 42nd minute, Ismael Díaz capitalized on an assist from Cambindo to send the ball into the back of the net, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.

Eduardo Armenta scores a spectacular goal to tie the game

In the second half, Puebla coach Gerardo Espinoza made substitutions, bringing in Ignacio Maestro Puch and Eduardo Mustre to add more depth to the attack.

Puebla tried to respond, though León maintained control for much of the match. In fact, in the 65th minute, Cambindo had a chance to extend the lead on a counterattack, but the home defense managed to clear the danger. The match seemed to be tilting in the visitors’ favor until the moment that changed everything.

In the 87th minute, Eduardo Armenta connected on a stunning volley and placed the ball into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Puebla fans. The shot was virtually impossible for goalkeeper Omar Martínez to stop and sealed the 1-1 draw.

The closing minutes were still tense for León, as Jordi Cortizo was sent off a few minutes before the end, leaving his team down to ten men.

When do Puebla and León play again?

After splitting the points, both teams will begin preparing for their Matchday 12 fixtures in the 2026 Apertura. Puebla will visit the Xolos de Tijuana on Friday, October 16, while León will host América on Saturday, October 17. For La Franja, the draw represents an opportunity to keep picking up points and build confidence, especially after a night in which it took a stroke of genius from Eduardo Armenta to avoid defeat. León, on the other hand, will have to work on its finishing after letting a lead slip away in the final minutes.
