Tottenham’s ticket for next season’s Premier League was secured on Sunday with a 1-0 win versus Everton. João Palhinha, who scored in the 42nd minute, will go down as the hero of the day for Tottenham. The on-loan Portuguese midfielder scored his 7th goal of the season, and 5th of the Premier League season.
With all to play for on the final day of the Premier League season, Tottenham and West Ham were 90 minutes away from either Premier League survival or relegation. Both at home, Tottenham hosted Everton, while West Ham hosted Leeds United.
Tottenham’s two-point cushion and significant goal-difference advantage meant they needed just one point to avoid relegation. On the other hand, West Ham needed to defeat Leeds United at home and hope that Everton, and former manager David Moyes, could do them a favor and win on the road at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. While West Ham did win their final match of the season, it was not enough as Tottenham also secured three points.
Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League for the second straight season, avoiding relegation by just two points. West Ham will now be playing in the Championship for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
