Can Argentina overcome the odds and win back-to-back World Cups?

Lluvia Zazueta Jun 13, 2026 3 min read

The World Cup has begun, and the Argentine national team received news that reinforces its status as one of the favorites: it will enter the tournament as the world’s number one ranked team.

The latest update to the FIFA Men’s World Rankings confirmed that the Albiceleste, the reigning world champions, regained the top spot thanks to their victories in the World Cup warm-up friendlies and will now seek to defend their 2022 World Cup title.

The team led by Lionel Scaloni overtook Spain, which remains in second place, and France, which dropped to third place following its defeat against Ivory Coast.

Argentina aims to repeat its glory

The South American team will begin its World Cup campaign in North America with the pressure and privilege of being the top-ranked team in the world.

The top spot is no fluke. Argentina has maintained remarkable consistency since winning the title in Qatar 2022 and heads to the World Cup with a solid core led by Lionel Messi and a generation that blends experience and youth.

Now, the mission will be historic: to become one of the few teams capable of winning two consecutive World Cups.

Morocco continues to make history

Marruecos

If there is one team that continues to surprise the world, it is Morocco.

The Atlas Lions have climbed to seventh place in the FIFA rankings, their highest position ever since the rankings were created in 1993.

The African side, which wowed the world by reaching the semifinals at Qatar 2022, has managed to remain among the powerhouses of international soccer and heads into the 2026 World Cup with the intention of proving that its success was no fluke.

Their rise caused the Netherlands to drop to eighth place, confirming the sustained growth of Moroccan football.

Mexico and Uruguay also move up

Among the Latin American teams, Mexico and Uruguay also saw positive changes ahead of the tournament’s start. El Tricolor climbed to 14th in the world, driven by its recent streak of strong results and the excitement surrounding hosting the World Cup at home. Uruguay, for its part, moved up to 16th place, while the United States lost ground and fell to 17th.

Another notable development was Iran’s entry into the world’s Top 20, cementing its status as one of the most competitive AFC teams at the moment.

The teams that rose and fell the most

The updated rankings revealed other interesting changes.

Hungary, Chile, and China were the teams that advanced the most within the top 100, each climbing three spots.

In contrast, Serbia suffered the steepest drop among the top-ranked teams, while Lebanon recorded the biggest overall drop, falling seven spots.

A ranking that could shape the future of the World Cup

Beyond prestige, the FIFA rankings will play an important role during the tournament. According to the official regulations, the ranking will serve as a tiebreaker in the event of a tie between teams at the end of the group stage and will also help determine which third-place teams advance to the Round of 16.

Therefore, finishing among the top spots represents not only international recognition but also a strategic advantage in the competition.

With Argentina at the top, Morocco breaking barriers, and several teams looking to make history, the stage is set for a 2026 FIFA World Cup that promises excitement from the very first minute.
