Chicago Fire FC shook up the transfer market on Monday by announcing the signing of iconic Polish forward Robert Lewandowski, bringing another world-class superstar to Major League Soccer (MLS).
After completing his four-season stint with FC Barcelona and becoming a free agent, the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund striker is heading to the United States. He signed a contract that ties him to the club through the 2027–28 season, occupying a Designated Player slot and an international spot.
Chicago’s Ambition
The Polish player’s arrival is no coincidence; it’s part of an aggressive project led by the team’s director of soccer and head coach, Gregg Berhalter.
“From the day Joe Mansueto and I met, we set out to build a world-class club that inspires greatness, one that belongs to Chicago and wins championships. Robert embodies those values and represents the standards this city deserves: a champion and a competitor,” Berhalter said. “We can’t wait to start working with him and for Chicago to see firsthand why he is one of the most revered sports icons in the world.”
A Deadly Goal Scorer: Legendary Stats
Lewandowski’s resume speaks for itself. Throughout his brilliant career, the forward has left an indelible mark on European soccer:
- Impressive stats: 629 goals and 159 assists in 869 professional club matches.
- A packed trophy case: 33 trophies in total, including 10 Bundesliga titles, 3 LaLiga titles, 1 UEFA Champions League title, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup title.
- Individual Honors: Two-time winner of the FIFA The Best Award, seven Bundesliga Golden Boots, one LaLiga Golden Boot, and the all-time record for most goals in a single Bundesliga season (41 goals in 2020–21).
- The King of Poland: Captain and all-time leading scorer for his national team, with a record of 89 goals in 167 appearances, leading his country in multiple World Cups and European Championships.
The Fire’s Moment in the Spotlight
Lewandowski is joining a franchise that is currently in excellent form. As the 2026 World Cup break approaches, the Chicago Fire sit third in the Eastern Conference with 26 points. In what is Berhalter’s second season at the helm, the team is looking to build on its success after returning to the playoffs last year for the first time since 2017.
The Polish striker will join a competitive squad that already features stars such as Hugo Cuypers, Philip Zinckernagel, and Jonathan Bamba. As the team resumes play on July 16 against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field, Chicago fans are already looking forward to “Lewy’s” goals and have their eyes set on 2028, the year their new soccer-only stadium will open.
