Esteban Solari promises a Pumas team with heart, identity, and a hunger for the title upon his return to CU

Club Universidad Nacional, known as Pumas, officially introduced Esteban “Tano” Solari as head coach of the first team, marking the return of a familiar face who will now be tasked with bringing the “Universitarios” back to the forefront of Mexican soccer.

The Argentine, who wore the gold-and-blue jersey in 2007, said that coaching Pumas is one of the greatest dreams of his career and made it clear that his main goal will be to build a competitive, united team with an identity that makes the fans proud.

Antonio Sancho Welcomes Him

During the presentation, Pumas’ vice president of sports, Antonio Sancho, recalled Solari’s time as a player and gave him a warm welcome to the club.

“Welcome back home. You were a standout as a player, and now we hope that as a coach you’ll lead us to win that title we all want,” he said.

These words marked the official start of a project that began on June 24, when the coach kicked off preseason training with the university squad in preparation for the Liga MX tournament and the Leagues Cup.

“I’m back home”

Visibly moved, Solari expressed his gratitude for the board’s trust and the warmth he has received since his arrival was announced.

“I’m very happy to be here, to be back in what I consider my home. I’m incredibly excited about what’s to come, and I want to invite all the fans to be part of this dream that we’ll build together,” he said.

The coach emphasized that the project’s success will depend on collective effort and not solely on the coaching staff’s decisions.

Identity will be the priority

One of the concepts he repeated most often during his press conference was the word “identity.” For Solari, Pumas must recapture the essence that has historically set the club apart: dedication, intensity, and a sense of belonging.

“What I want most is for people to feel proud when they watch the team play. We want to represent the values of this institution both on and off the field,” he explained.

The Argentine believes the club has a very distinct identity and that his job will be to strengthen it so it can once again become a sporting powerhouse.

A team with heart and grit

Beyond tactical schemes, Solari made it clear that his priority will be to build a solid team.

“I want a team that conveys something when it takes the field—one with heart, grit, and competitiveness, and that fights until the very last minute.”

He also noted that his teams tend to reflect the coach’s personality.

“I’m passionate, straightforward, and authentic. I’m going to give it my all so this team takes on my character as soon as possible.”

The goals are clear

Although he avoided promising immediate championships, Solari was clear about the team’s sporting goals. The first goal will be to qualify for the playoffs and, subsequently, to compete for the championship.

“There’s no point in looking too far ahead. The first step is to build a strong identity. If we achieve that, we’ll be much closer to reaching our goals.”

There won’t be a set system

On the soccer side, the new coach explained that he isn’t committed to any specific tactical scheme. He emphasized that he will prioritize his players’ performance over a specific formation on the field.

“I’m not a one-system coach. What matters are the roles, reading each game, and getting the most out of the squad.”

Keylor Navas, a leader in the locker room

One of the players who received the most praise was Keylor Navas, whom Solari considers essential to the new project. The coach highlighted not only the soccer skills of the experienced Costa Rican goalkeeper but also his leadership.

“I found him to be a humble, approachable person with an enormous willingness to help the team. Having Keylor on the team instills calm and order on the field.”

He also revealed that since his arrival, he has maintained constant communication with key players such as Nathan Silva, Coco Carrasquilla, and Pablo Bennevendo to strengthen the locker room.

A project built by everyone

Throughout virtually his entire presentation, Solari emphasized a message he aims to convey to both the team and the fans: rebuilding Pumas will be a collective effort.

“Projects require hard work, trust, and time. Together, we’re going to build the Pumas we want.”

The coach stated that he isn’t here to make false promises but to work hard to restore the team’s competitiveness.

Pumas Fan Fest 2026 Has a Date

During the event, Antonio Sancho also took the opportunity to invite fans to Pumas Fan Fest 2026, which will take place on July 12 at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. The day will feature activities for the whole family and a friendly match against América de Cali as part of the team’s preparation for the 2026 Apertura.

With the arrival of Esteban Solari, Pumas officially begins a new era full of hope. The Argentine coach is committed to reclaiming the university’s DNA, strengthening the sense of belonging, and building a team that will once again compete for the top spots in Mexican soccer. The bar will be set high, but the message has been clear from day one: the new Pumas want to play with heart, identity, and a hunger for the championship.
