Carlos Armando Torres Bujanda Jul 11, 2026 3 min read

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, who played in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup with the “Bafana Bafana,” was found dead in Cape Town. The sports world and FIFA mourn his tragic and untimely passing.

The international soccer community is in mourning following confirmation of the tragic news of the death of Jayden Adams, midfielder for the South African national team and Mamelodi Sundowns, at the young age of 25.

The news comes just a few weeks after the young talent proudly represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, where he played an active role with the Bafana Bafana.

His Time at the 2026 World Cup

Adams was a key player in South Africa’s lineup during the group stage of the World Cup. The midfielder started in the opening match, where his team lost 2-0 to Mexico, as well as in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic. He later came off the bench in the 1-0 victory over South Korea.

Although he did not see action in the Round of 16 match in which South Africa was eliminated by Canada in a 1-0 loss, his dedication on the field left an unforgettable mark on his nation’s historic campaign.

National Outrage and Police Investigation

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his grief in an emotional official statement:

“It is with deep shock and a heavy heart that I have learned of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African soccer has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates, and the millions of fans who watched him grow.”

So far, authorities have not disclosed the official cause of death. However, the Western Cape Police reported that a formal investigation has been launched after the soccer player’s body was found Saturday morning at a residence in Schotsche Kloof, a suburb in central Cape Town.

Condolences from the Soccer World and FIFA

Adams’s passing has resonated deeply in the highest echelons of the beautiful game. FIFA President Gianni Infantino sent a message of support and condolences to the player’s loved ones:

“It is incredibly sad to hear that South African midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after taking part in his country’s historic World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global soccer community, are with his family, friends, and teammates. He will be deeply missed.”

For its part, the South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU) said it was “devastated” by the loss of a player who “carried the nation’s hopes with pride, courage, and distinction.”

A Rising Career Cut Short

Jayden Adams came up through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch FC, becoming the first product of its academy to sign a professional contract. He played 139 matches for that club and helped them win the Carling Knockout title in 2023. His outstanding play caught the attention of African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, where he transferred in January 2025.

The editorial staff at Fútbol Mundial joins in offering condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire South African people during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
