Concacaf and Liga MX make a statement: Nahuel Guzmán, Gignac, and “Pollo” Briseño receive record-breaking suspensions

North American soccer is in shock following the confirmation of a series of unprecedented suspensions for three of the region’s most high-profile players. Nahuel Guzmán, André-Pierre Gignac, and Antonio “Pollo” Briseño have received historic suspensions as a result of their actions in the recent CONCACAF Champions League Final and, in some cases, due to a series of controversies in Liga MX.

Both the confederation and the Mexican league have sent a strong message of “zero tolerance” for unsportsmanlike and violent conduct. Below is a detailed breakdown of the sanctions that will keep these players sidelined for a considerable amount of time.

Nahuel Guzmán: “Patón” pays dearly for his repeated offenses

The Tigres goalkeeper is undoubtedly the most affected by this wave of punishments, having accumulated suspensions at both the international and domestic levels for separate incidents.

  • Concachampions 2026: CONCACAF imposed a seven-game suspension in confederation tournaments on the Argentine player. The charges include using abusive language toward the referees and actively participating in the mass brawl that took place at the end of the title match.
  • Liga MX (A Look Back): It’s worth noting that Guzmán was already serving an unprecedented suspension from the 2024 Clausura, where he received an 11-match suspension, a fine, and a community service requirement after being caught aiming a laser pointer at the opposing goalkeeper during a Clásico Regio.

André-Pierre Gignac: Double Punishment and a Historic “Stain”

The legendary French striker for Tigres also did not escape sports justice, facing penalties for the chaos in CONCACAF and an unprecedented red card in Liga MX.

  • 2026 Concachampions: Gignac was suspended for three matches by the confederation for his direct involvement in the mass brawl at the end of the match that crowned Toluca as champion.
  • Liga MX (Clausura 2026): In an unprecedented event in his career, the Frenchman received his first direct red card in Mexican soccer after 11 years playing in the country. The forward was handed a one-match suspension for striking player Rodrigo Echeverría.

Antonio “Pollo” Briseño: The champion is also punished

The center back, currently on Toluca’s roster, was unable to fully celebrate his team’s international title, as he faced disciplinary consequences for the post-match brawl against his former team, Tigres.

  • Concachampions 2026: Briseño was handed a three-match suspension by CONCACAF after being involved in the violent incidents at the end of the final against Tigres.
  • Liga MX (Significant Precedent): Briseño is no stranger to severe sanctions. In the 2019 Apertura, while playing for Chivas, he received a harsh four-game suspension (two for a direct red card and two additional games) for a hard tackle that caused an injury to Giovani dos Santos in a Clásico Nacional.

These suspensions represent a major blow to Tigres and Toluca, who will lose key players for their upcoming competitive matches, setting a stern precedent regarding the expected behavior of soccer stars in the region.
