The United States capped off a successful international window with a flourish by defeating Canada 1-0, thanks to a goal by young forward Justin Ellis, who once again proved he has the potential to become one of the national team’s rising stars.
The 19-year-old forward scored the game’s only goal in the 29th minute, marking his second goal in three matches with the U.S. national team.
With this result, the United States finished the window with four wins in four matches, having also defeated Chile, Peru, and Mexico.
Justin Ellis Steps Up at Just the Right Moment
The goal came after a nice combination down the right flank. Alex Freeman and Malik Tillman played a give-and-go that created space before Freeman sent a cross into the box.
That’s when Ellis appeared; he simply had to tap the ball in to make it 1-0.
Interestingly, just 10 minutes earlier, the forward had been left lying on the field after taking a hard foul. After receiving treatment on the sideline, he returned still feeling some discomfort, but that didn’t stop him from becoming the hero of the night.
Ellis, who plays for Orlando City in MLS, had also scored the first goal in the U.S. victory over Peru on September 26.
The United States Bets on Young Players
Beyond the result, the international window gave coach Mauricio Pochettino the opportunity to evaluate several young players with an eye toward the national team’s future.
The starting lineup against Canada had an average of just 21 international appearances and an average age of 23 years and 156 days.
In addition, 13 players made their national team debuts during the last four matches.
“From the start, they looked very comfortable because they already knew each other,” said defender Chris Richards, who highlighted the positive atmosphere among the new members of the team.
Pochettino, for his part, said that the most important thing was not simply securing the four victories, but the attitude shown by his players.
“I’m not happy just because we won. I’m happy with the performance and the commitment the players showed,” the coach said.
Brian Schwake Also Shone
The U.S. victory had another standout performer in goal. Brian Schwake, Nashville’s goalkeeper, managed to keep a clean sheet during his first start and just his second appearance with the national team.
His best save came in the 63rd minute, when he made a spectacular fingertip save on a point-blank shot by Luc de Fougerolles that ended up crashing off the crossbar.
Canada had entered this matchday on the heels of victories over Chile and Peru, but couldn’t carry that momentum into the game against the United States.
The United States and Canada are already looking ahead to the Nations League
With the victory, the United States now has 18 wins, 12 losses, and 13 draws against Canada in all competitions.
Now, both teams will have to shift their focus and prepare for the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Nations League, which will be played in November.
The United States will face Haiti, while Canada will take on Guatemala.
For Pochettino, beyond the result, this international window yielded something even more important: a new generation of players who are beginning to step up to earn a spot on the future U.S. national team.
