León faced a tough challenge against Monterrey and ended up doing exactly what they needed to do: capitalize on its chances, hold on when the game got tough, and come away with the three points.

La Fiera defeated Rayados 2-0 on Matchday 5 of Liga MX, in a game that had it all: goals, scoring chances, a red card, and a Monterrey team that played with a man advantage for much of the second half.

The result was even more important for León because it came just before they travel to face Real Salt Lake in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.

Cortizo Paves the Way for León

Monterrey started by trying to take control of the match. The team coached by Matías Almeyda looked to push into the opponent’s box from the opening minutes and earned a few corner kicks.

Lucas Ocampos and Diego Rossi tried to add depth to the attack, while Orbelín Pineda tried his luck from outside the box.

But León wasn’t far behind.

La Fiera found spaces when they regained possession and began to threaten with quick transitions. By the 10th minute, Díber Cambindo had already sent a warning with a cross-goal shot that sailed just wide of the post.

The reward came in the 24th minute.

Cambindo was involved in the play and set up Jordi Cortizo inside the box. The midfielder made no mistake, firing a low shot with his right foot that found the back of the net just inside the left post to make it 1-0.

Rayados tried to respond before halftime, but León held its ground and prevented the visitors from equalizing.

Monterrey Takes the Numerical Advantage

For the second half, Almeyda shuffled his lineup by bringing in Luca Orellano, looking to give Monterrey more offensive firepower.

Rayados began to press harder. Hugo Cuypers, Ocampos, Pineda, and Fidel Ambríz all had chances, but the ball simply wouldn’t go in.

And then came the moment that could have completely changed the course of the game.

In the 66th minute, Jhohan Romaña was sent off after fouling Ocampos. León was down to 10 players, and Monterrey still had about half an hour to find the equalizer.

Everything seemed to be going Rayados’ way.

But La Fiera had other plans.

Penalty and León’s Clincher

Just as Monterrey was pressing hardest, León pulled off the play that practically sealed the match.

In the 76th minute, Alfonso Alvarado was fouled by Luis Cárdenas inside the box. The referee didn’t hesitate and pointed to the penalty spot.

Daniel Arcila stepped up and, three minutes later, confidently converted the penalty. His shot found the center of the net to make it 2-0.

Down a man, León now held a lead that seemed nearly impossible to overcome.

Monterrey went all out in the final minutes. Ocampos, Jesús Corona, and Cuypers tried to pull one back with crosses and shots inside the box, but La Fiera’s defense withstood every attack.

The final whistle confirmed a victory that tastes even sweeter for León given the circumstances of the match.

La Fiera put a stop to Monterrey’s winning streak, earned three crucial points, and can now shift its focus to its international campaign.

Meanwhile, Rayados will have to analyze what went wrong, especially after having a numerical advantage for much of the second half and failing to capitalize on it.

León, for now, is celebrating a victory that wasn’t in the script and that could give them a significant boost heading into what lies ahead.
