Major League Soccer (MLS) returns to action Saturday for Round 27, with a stacked 14-match slate before Inter Miami CF close out the weekend’s fixtures on Sunday night in Columbus.
Vancouver look to keep distance from Houston and St. Louis
Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps travel to face DC United on Saturday night, looking to protect their spot at the top of the Western Conference table. The Whitecaps have built a healthy cushion over the chasing pack this season, and a positive result on the road would keep the pressure on Houston Dynamo and St. Louis City, who both sit just five points back in the race for top spot. However, Vancouver have lost three of their last six home MLS matches and have won just 3 of their 11 all-time meetings against DC United.
Nashville chase the Supporters’ Shield
Having already secured their playoff spot last week, Nashville SC now turn their attention to locking down the Supporters’ Shield as they host Toronto FC. Nashville have been hot offensively at GEODIS Park, scoring 14 goals in their last four home matches. On the contrary, Toronto have failed to shut out opponents in 10 straight league matches.
Nashville have been the league’s dominant side all season, and every additional point pushes them closer to the top overall seed heading into the postseason. Currently, Nashville are eight points ahead of Western Conference leaders Vancouver in the Supporters’ Shield race.
Houston push for the West’s summit
Houston Dynamo host Sporting Kansas City looking to keep pace at the top of the Western Conference table. Houston have quietly built one of the most consistent campaigns in the league this season, and a win here would keep them within striking distance of Vancouver. Sporting KC are currently at the bottom of the MLS table with just 18 points and have failed to keep a clean sheet all season.
Messi and Miami close out the round
Inter Miami CF conclude Round 27 with a Sunday night trip to Columbus, sitting just outside the East’s top two and looking to keep pace with New England, who are in action a day earlier against Real Salt Lake. With goals expected to fly in as they do in most Inter Miami games, all eyes will be on whether they can respond to whatever New England does on Saturday.
