Paris Saint-Germain have won yet another European title and their second straight UEFA Super Cup following their 2-1 win against Europa League champions Aston Villa. Desire Doué was the standout player in PSG’s opening game of the season as he provided a goal and an assist for the Champions League winners.
PSG managed to take the lead just 20 minutes in through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Doué played the ball quickly over to the Georgian winger, who took a great touch before smashing home a top-left corner effort past Villa keeper Marco Bizot.
Despite a dominant first half for the Parisian side in the first half, Aston Villa responded on the scoresheet just before the half-time whistle. 17-year-old Brian Madjo made a strong impact in the first 45 minutes, but missed a handful of chances. John McGinn played a great cross towards the back post, and Madjo was too strong for Pacho. The Villa striker side-footed his shot into the roof of the goal to equalize for the English side.
With possession shifting towards a more even matchup in the second half, it was PSG who managed to find the winner. Desire Doué was once again at the heart of the matchup, with a perfectly timed run putting him into a world of space. He had plenty of time to bend a left-footed effort to give PSG the win in the 61st minute.
With this win, Luis Enrique became only the third coach to win the UEFA Super Cup on three separate occasions. Silverware will once again be on the line for PSG in their next match as they face Lens in the French Super Cup Final on Sunday.
For Aston Villa, they will be disappointed not to have won, but they have a 11-day break before facing Brighton in their Premier League opener.
