The opening fixtures of the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League delivered drama across the night, with European giants entering new eras under new management.
Germany 1-1 Netherlands
Jürgen Klopp came within a minute of a debut win as Germany boss, only to be denied by his former player Cody Gakpo. Felix Nmecha put Germany ahead just before the half-hour mark, as Klopp’s side continued to apply pressure. Xavi’s Netherlands dominated for long stretches after the half-time break, but were repeatedly denied by new Germany No. 1 Marc-André ter Stegen.
Cody Gakpo finally managed to find the winner after meeting debutant Ruben van Bommel’s cross with an athletic finish in the second minute of stoppage time. Both new managers share a point on their debuts, with plenty to take away from this highly competitive match.
Norway 3-2 Denmark
Erling Haaland struck twice as Norway edged past rivals Denmark. Oscar Bobb and Haaland put the hosts 2-0 up inside 18 minutes, before Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Højlund pulled Denmark back with goals in the 25th and 60th minutes.
Haaland restored Norway’s lead in the 74th minute, converting a crafty corner routine involving Martin Ødegaard and Antonio Nusa. His brace continued his red-hot form from this summer’s World Cup, with the Norwegian star now having scored in 10 of his last 13 games for club and country.
Portugal 1-0 Wales
Jorge Jesus’s first game in charge of the defending champions ended in a narrow win, with João Félix’s 22nd-minute strike making the difference. Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside and squandered further chances as Portugal dominated for most of the match.
