Morris scored in the 77th minute, marking his 87th career goal and surpassing Raúl Ruidíaz as the club’s all-time top scorer. Ruidíaz recorded 71 MLS regular-season goals for Seattle, just two more than Morris, a 30-year-old Seattle native.
Paul Rothrock put the Sounders ahead for good in the 57th minute with a stunning long-range strike, making it 2-1. Christian Roldan extended the lead in the 84th minute after coming off the bench in the 71st. Albert Rusnák sealed the emphatic win with a stoppage-time goal and contributed two assists.
LAFC’s Efforts Fall Short
David Martínez gave LAFC (2-1-0) a late glimmer of hope, scoring in the second minute of stoppage time to cut the deficit to 4-2. The 19-year-old midfielder, who scored four goals as a rookie last season, tallied his first of the new campaign.
Kossa-Rienzi’s Breakthrough and Early Drama
Kossa-Rienzi opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a brilliant solo effort. The 22-year-old intercepted a long ball from LAFC’s Artem Smolyakov, cut inside at the corner of the six-yard box, and powered a left-footed shot into the net.
LAFC responded in the 38th minute after Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas mishandled a corner from Smolyakov. Nathan Ordaz’s initial shot was blocked by João Paulo, but he buried the rebound from close range to level the match at 1-1.
MLS Next Pro Talent Shines
Ordaz and Kossa-Rienzi became the eighth and ninth players this season to score in MLS after developing in MLS Next Pro, the league’s reserve competition launched in 2022.
With this statement victory, the Sounders (1-1-1) gain momentum as they look to climb the Western Conference standings.
