Manchester City’s 2-1 comeback win versus Southampton secured their spot in the FA Cup final for the fourth consecutive season. It was an unlikely starting XI for City as Guardiola heavily rotated for the cup fixture and made nine changes from the midweek league victory vs. Burnley.

Despite City dominating throughout, it was Southampton who took the lead in the 79th minute from a stunning effort by Finn Azaz. City replied quickly, just three minutes later, via a deflected Jeremy Doku shot. The winger who entered in the 58th minute was substantial in City’s second-half dominance as he finished with a goal and the assist to the eventual winner just five minutes later.

Nico Gonzalez, who played in place of the injured Rodri today, scored a Rodri-esque outside-the-box goal to secure the win for City in the 87th minute. It was just the defensive midfielder’s second goal of the season, which capped off a Player of the Match performance. Nico has not seen many minutes as of late due to Rodri’s return to form and fitness, so a big performance from him today may help his case to play more in this final stretch of the season.

Despite the win, it was yet another underwhelming performance from Phil Foden. The English international, who has not played much as of late, was subbed off after 58 minutes. It was following his departure and Doku’s entry to the field where City’s overall play improved.

John Stones and Mateo Kovacic were bright spots for City in rare starts for both players, who have spent most of the season on the sidelines due to injury. Pep Guardiola will be excited to have most of his squad ready for the final stretch of the season.

Manchester City will face the winner of Chelsea vs. Leeds in the FA Cup final on May 16th.
