Arsenal will be playing in their first Champions League since 2006, following a 1-0 (2-1 aggregate) win over Atletico Madrid. On their run to the Champions League final, Arsenal have gone unbeaten while conceding the fewest goals (6) and keeping the most clean sheets (9).
The first half did not provide much action from either side, but it was Bukayo Saka’s last first-half goal that gave Arsenal the advantage over the Spanish side heading into the final 45 minutes of the tie. Saka pounced on the opportunity to give Arsenal the lead following a great save from Jan Oblak on Leandro Trossard’s shot.
Atletico Madrid were unable to generate many chances, but may feel hard done by some refereeing decisions. Guiliano Simeone’s 1-on-1 chance against Raya was squandered following some questionable contact from Gabriel. It was not the only time Gabriel was in the midst of the action, as he was said to be fouled by Marc Pubill, which then negated Calafiori’s foul in the penalty area on Antoine Griezmann.
Overall, Atletico Madrid were not good enough in the second half, and there were no true moments for them to level the tie. Diego Simeone’s 68th-minute substitution, which removed Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez while down a goal, will definitely be looked back at as a questionable decision.
Arsenal will face the winner of Bayern Munich vs. PSG in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30th in Budapest, Hungary.
