Racism following the Netherlands’ elimination: Players face insults after losing to Morocco

Lluvia Zazueta Jul 2, 2026 3 min read

Netherlands’ elimination in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was much more than just a sporting defeat. After losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout at Monterrey Stadium, several players on the Dutch national team were targeted with racist insults on social media, prompting a strong reaction from the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

Hours after the match, players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville began receiving a flood of offensive messages, mainly for missing their penalty kicks. The situation escalated to the point where some chose to restrict comments on their profiles to stem the attacks.

The KNVB Condemns Hate Messages

In response to the incident, the Dutch Football Federation issued a statement strongly rejecting any act of racism and discrimination, making it clear that such behavior has no place either within or outside of sports.

“Racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in football, not online, and not in our society, the KNVB stated.

The organization publicly backed its players and reiterated its commitment to combating any manifestation of hate, especially those that appear on social media following high-profile sporting events.

They Thank the Fans in Monterrey for Their Support

In addition to speaking out against the attacks, the Dutch federation used the statement to thank the thousands of fans who supported the Oranje during their participation in the 2026 World Cup, both at Monterrey Stadium and from around the world.

“We thank the players, the coaching staff, and everyone involved for their efforts during this World Cup. We also express our gratitude to the fans, both at the stadium and at home, and to all those who supported the Dutch team. Football brings people together, regardless of their background or where they come from, the KNVB stated.

A Sad Ending for the Oranje

With this message, the Netherlands national team officially brought its participation in the 2026 World Cup to a close. However, the conversation shifted from focusing solely on the sporting aspect to reigniting the debate about racism in football and the impact social media has on players.

While Morocco celebrates its advancement to the round of 16, the KNVB made it clear that it will continue to support its players and condemn any act of discrimination, reiterating that football must be a space of respect, inclusion, and unity for everyone.
