In a thrilling finish, the Spanish national team secured its spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Portugal 1-0 in the Iberian Derby. In front of more than 70,000 fans who packed the majestic AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, “La Furia Roja” found the light at the end of the tunnel to advance to a stage that had eluded them since their glory days at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Now, Spain will travel to Los Angeles to face, on Friday, the winner of the match between the United States and Belgium, which will take place at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time in Seattle, Washington.

Spain started the match in overwhelming fashion, relying on depth and runs down the flanks. With Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal wreaking havoc on the right side, and Marc Cucurella constantly joining the attack down the left flank, the Spanish side mounted constant attacks. However, the long-awaited goal refused to come, whether due to a lack of finishing from the Spanish attackers or the saves by Diogo Costa, the Portuguese goalkeeper who emerged as the hero.

On the other side, the Portuguese squad did not sit idly by. Roberto Martínez’s team capitalized on the swift runs of João Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Pedro Neto, always looking to connect with their star player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite their efforts, the Portuguese attacks either went wide or ended up in the safe hands of goalkeeper Unai Simón.

A Heart-Stopping Finale in Arlington

When the clock ticked over to the 89th minute, and everything seemed to indicate that the match was inevitably headed for extra time, magic struck.

A brilliant assist from Ferran Torres broke through Portugal’s defensive lines and left Mikel Merino completely alone in front of Diogo Costa. The midfielder, who had come off the bench as a substitute to shake things up, made no mistake. With a cool, precise finish, he beat the Portuguese goalkeeper and sent the ball into the back of the net, sending the stands in Texas into a frenzy.

The drama lasted until the very last breath of stoppage time. In a desperate attempt, Bernardo Silva had a golden opportunity to tie the score, but his header sailed well over Unai Simón’s goal.

The final whistle confirmed Portugal’s elimination and Spain’s advancement to the quarterfinals as they continue to dream big at this 2026 World Cup.
