After two underwhelming seasons, Real Madrid will be keen to right their wrongs and finally challenge for silverware in all competitions this season. A great start to the season
There were plenty of questions asked of Jose Mourinho when he was appointed to the dugout, but things seem to be going according to plan for the Portuguese manager. However, it is just two games. From what we have seen in the first two games, they have been pressing with more intensity, creating more chances, and are more effective going forward.
However, their defense has proven to be their main Achilles heel, which we saw get cut apart for both Espanyol’s and Real Sociedad’s goals. It’s easy to assume that things are going well when you’re winning and facing “mediocre” teams, but this Real Madrid side will be tested when results stop going their way, and they face more difficult teams.
New additions and old faces who can play a big role
A few players who could be important for Real Madrid this season are Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi. It goes without saying that Kylian Mbappe will be expected to carry Real Madrid over the line this season. After two trophyless seasons, his goals will be vital for Los Blancos. With Bellingham back in his favorite position and orchestrating attacks, there is no doubt that he will be important for Mourinho. His performances over the last two games further back up why he looks set to have a blockbuster season.
Dumfries and Cucurella were much-needed reinforcements given how much Real Madrid’s backline was stretched last year. Cucurella’s presence at left back will allow Vini Jr to stay more upfront and link up with Mbappe, while Dumfries is a solid choice at right back on both ends of the field. They will provide more protection to Real Madrid’s backline and will also look to link the attack when going forward on the wings.
Espi could prove to be a super important super sub for Madrid. The breakthrough striker of the La Liga campaign last year, while saving Levante from relegation, is set for a new type of role under Mourinho. There are few backup strikers on the market better than the Valencian native, who is great in the air, powerful, and can get in ideal areas for him to score.
The real test is still to come
There is a lot to be encouraged by after Madrid’s opening two games, but it is still far too early to make a definitive judgment on Mourinho’s impact and role. The Portuguese manager has already brought greater intensity and a more direct approach to the side, with the team looking to find their tactical groove.
Still, Real Madrid’s defensive issues remain a concern, and those problems could cause more issues as the level of opponent rises. With Mbappe, Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., and the rest of the squad at his disposal, Mourinho has no shortage of talent to work with. Now, it is up to him to get back to winning trophies.
