Edson Álvarez denies kidnapping allegations

The midfielder and star of the Mexican national team broke his silence after being dragged into an off-field scandal. In a firm and direct statement on Thursday, Edson Álvarez denied any connection to the serious allegations linking him to the alleged kidnapping of producer Juan José López Ordóñez.

In a forceful statement posted on his social media accounts, the former West Ham player made it clear that his name and image are being used as media bait in a conflict that has nothing to do with him. “I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to link my name to events, conflicts, or conduct that are completely foreign to me,” the national team player declared, asserting that others are seeking to boost ratings at his expense.

Where did the controversy come from?

The scandal erupted when an entertainment outlet published López Ordóñez’s account. Here’s a breakdown of the allegations:

  • The deal: The producer claims to have produced a documentary about Edson’s career worth 3.5 million pesos (just over 200,000 dollars).
  • The intermediaries: The deal was allegedly not made directly with the soccer player, but rather with his ex-wife and his former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache.
  • The “kidnapping”: López Ordóñez claims that, when he went to collect payment for the work, he was held against his will for an entire day and intimidated by two men. To top it off, he dropped the bombshell that Álvarez was aware of the situation, though he presented no evidence to support this.

Courts, not sensationalist magazines

True to his no-nonsense style, Álvarez demanded that if there is any real evidence, it be taken to the courts. “If anyone believes they have evidence proving any misconduct on my part, there are authorities, prosecutors’ offices, and courts to which such evidence can be presented—not through statements in media outlets whose content prioritizes sensationalism and media exposure over rigor and the truth,” he declared.

“Machín” will not sit idly by. His legal team already has the case file on the table to review and take decisive action against those responsible for spreading these false allegations.
