World Soccer—The match between Tenerife and Andorra in Spain’s Second Division was suspended on Monday after home team forward Jesús de Miguel suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest following a violent collision with the visiting goalkeeper at Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.

The score was tied 2-2, and the game was in stoppage time when Tenerife launched a counterattack with a long pass from its own half. De Miguel, 30, ran toward the opposing goal with his eyes fixed on the ball, while Andorra’s goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, also came rushing out at full speed to clear the ball.

The collision was brutal. Owono collided with the Tenerife forward, who was left unconscious on the field. According to reports in the Spanish press, players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance, while the referee showed the visiting goalkeeper a direct red card.

According to reports in the Spanish media, medical staff worked for about 20 minutes to resuscitate De Miguel, who had suffered complete cardiac and respiratory arrest. After being stabilized, the forward was carried off on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital, where he was admitted in very serious condition and placed under constant medical supervision.

Based on reports from the Spanish press, the referee informed the captains and coaches of both teams that the match was suspended, a decision made amid scenes of great concern in the stadium and on the benches.

Andorra issued a statement sending all its strength and best wishes to Jesús de Miguel following the serious incident that occurred during the match, with the hope that he will recover soon. This show of solidarity quickly spread throughout Spanish soccer, with messages from LaLiga and Segunda División clubs, including Real Madrid, which wished the Tenerife-born forward a speedy recovery.

The incident immediately brought to mind other instances in which soccer came to a complete halt due to a medical emergency on the field, and once again highlighted the importance of rapid medical response in stadiums. In Tenerife, the resuscitation efforts carried out right on the field proved crucial in ensuring that De Miguel could be transported to the hospital alive.

So far, the Tenerife club has not provided further details on the player’s condition, beyond confirming that he was admitted in very serious condition. The match, which was tied 2-2 in stoppage time, was suspended pending a decision by league officials on whether to resume play.

On a Monday that was supposed to be just another matchday in the Second Division, the result took a back seat. The only thing that mattered at the end of the night at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium was the health of Jesús de Miguel, and the shared hope throughout Spanish soccer that the Tenerife forward will pull through.
