From the 3 de Marzo Stadium to the University Rector’s Office: “Cheto” Leaño, from Tecos Captain to UAG Rector

Mexican soccer has a new chapter off the field. Juan Carlos “Cheto” Leaño del Castillo, a former soccer player and longtime captain of the Tecos, has been named the new president of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG), the institution with which he has been associated his entire life—first as a player and later as an administrator.

The appointment was announced on Monday, November 2, 2026, at a meeting of the University Council in the “Dr. Luis Garibay Gutiérrez” Auditorium at the Rector’s Office. According to a statement from the UAG itself, Leaño del Castillo took over the position from his father, Antonio Leaño Reyes, who concluded his term and will remain associated with the institution as Rector for Life and an advisor to the Rector’s Office.

His first act as rector, according to the university’s announcement, was precisely to appoint his father as Rector for Life—a gesture that encapsulates the transition: continuity and renewal as the UAG approaches its centennial, to be celebrated in 2035.

“Cheto’s” soccer career is that of a one-club man—something increasingly rare in modern soccer. He made his professional debut with the UAG Tecos on September 4, 1998, and spent his entire career with the university team, where he played as a center back, served as captain, and appeared in 301 matches, scoring 9 goals.

The highlight of his playing career came in the 2005 Clausura, when the Tecos, under the guidance of Daniel Guzmán, reached the Liga MX final against América. The university team lost that series by an aggregate score of 7–4, and “Cheto” came within a hair’s breadth of the title he was never able to win as a player.

His career ended where it began: in the 2012 Clausura, following the Tecos’ relegation to the Liga de Ascenso, Leaño announced his retirement from professional soccer. It marked the end of an era tied to the Estadio 3 de Marzo, the home where he established himself as one of the institution’s most iconic players—a team that has not returned to Mexico’s First Division since then.

After hanging up his cleats, “Cheto” didn’t stray far from the university. He served as General Director and Vice Rector for Administration—a position he assumed in 2014—in addition to serving on the Board of Directors and chairing the Advisory Council on Innovation, roles from which he participated in projects focused on institutional transformation and technological adoption.

His academic background supports this appointment. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UAG itself and a Global Executive MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, in addition to senior management programs at IPADE and executive studies at institutions such as MIT Sloan, UCLA Anderson, and Singapore Management University.

Among the goals announced for his tenure are strengthening academic quality, promoting innovation, expanding national and international partnerships, and consolidating a university experience centered on student development. All of this is done with an eye toward the university’s centennial in 2035 and a conviction that the university itself summarizes as follows: to educate individuals capable of positively transforming their environment through knowledge, values, and a sense of humanity.

At 48, “Cheto” Leaño is trading his captain’s armband for the office of Rector. The same man who defended the Tecos’ colors for 14 years will now lead the institution that shaped him as a soccer player, a professional, and an administrator.
