World Soccer.—Spanish soccer is in mourning following the death of Jesús de Miguel, a forward for CD Tenerife, who died at age 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match against FC Andorra. The news was confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, and sparked a wave of tributes from clubs, players, and sports figures.
Known as “Demi” among his teammates, the forward lost his life after a hard collision with goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the final moments of Monday’s match at Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. The match was called off with the score tied at 2-2.
What happened to Jesús de Miguel during the match?

The incident occurred in stoppage time. De Miguel was running toward the ball after a long pass from a teammate when Owono came out of his goal area to try to clear it. The two players collided, and the forward fell to the field.
The player suffered cardiac arrest and received medical attention before being transported to a hospital, where he remained in intensive care. Although there was initially hope for his recovery, his neurological condition worsened, and the club confirmed his death around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
Owono was sent off for the incident, and the match could not resume. Spanish police opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the death, under judicial supervision. However, the prosecutor’s office noted that it would be difficult to initiate criminal proceedings for a collision that occurred during the normal course of a match.
Messi, Piqué, and Nadal Pay Their Respects to the Soccer Player

The news quickly spread beyond Tenerife and reached some of the most renowned figures in sports. Lionel Messi shared a farewell message in which he said there were no words to describe what had happened and wished him to rest in peace.
Gerard Piqué also reacted to the tragedy. The former Barcelona defender, who is a majority shareholder of FC Andorra, expressed his sadness over the loss.
Rafael Nadal joined the outpouring of solidarity with a message expressing his sorrow and offering support to those going through this difficult time.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid also posted messages of condolence. During the Champions League matches played on Tuesday, several stadiums paid tribute to the soccer player with moments of silence and an image of him displayed on the screens. Spanish teams playing at home also omitted the competition’s traditional anthem before the start of their matches.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation also expressed its condolences and postponed matches in the Copa del Rey and the Copa de la Reina as a sign of respect.
A Career Built Away from the Spotlight

Jesús de Miguel was born in Madrid in 1996 and began his soccer career in the Leganés youth academy in 2015. He then played for various teams in the Spanish leagues, eventually enjoying a particularly standout stint with Castellón.
In 2023, he scored 16 goals and played a key role in helping the club secure promotion to the Second Division. In the summer of 2025, he joined Tenerife and once again demonstrated his scoring ability: he scored six goals in his first five matches and finished the season with 11 goals, helping the team earn promotion.
The forward was left-footed, stood 1.90 meters tall, and had a young daughter. His career path mirrored that of so many soccer players who move through different leagues with the hope of making their way in professional sports.
Tenerife announced that his teammates and club representatives would accompany the family during the funeral in Navahermosa, in the province of Toledo. A tribute was also organized so that fans could remember the player at the stadium.
“Demi’s” death cast a deep shadow of sadness over Spanish soccer and served as a reminder that, behind every jersey, there is a person, a family, and a story that goes far beyond the field.
