Argentina vs. Egypt: The next battle for the reigning champions

Argentina faces Egypt tomorrow in their quest to book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals. After picking up a hard-fought win against a resilient Cape Verde side, La Albiceleste now shift their focus towards the 7-time AFCON Champions led by Mohamed Salah. Lionel Messi will be looking to add to his World Cup goal tally as he looks to edge Mbappe and Haaland in the Golden Boot race.

Argentina will have certainly learned that no opponent is to be underestimated after their recent close encounter with Cape Verde. The World Champions did not put in the most convincing shift during their 120 minutes with Cape Verde as the South Americans looked sluggish and unable to match Cape Verde’s physicality. One weapon that Argentina does possess is their superior combination play and technical ability. Lionel Messi has demonstrated in every match for Argentina his ability to create a moment when needed.

Egypt comes into this game knowing who they are up against. However, whether they can repeat their heroics against Australia remains a doubt for many spectators. Mo Salah is not quite in the form that Egypt would have wanted him to be, but tomorrow presents the opportunity for him to change the narrative of the kind of tournament he has had. Egypt will be looking to overpower Argentina with their physicality, as their athleticism is often cited as their biggest weakness.

The winner of this match will face the winner of Colombia versus Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11.
