Chelsea looking to add veteran leadership with potential signings of Welbeck and Henderson

As Chelsea and Xavi Alonso look to bolster their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season, there have been two unlikely names added to the transfer mix today.

With a focus on youth signings or “investment” signings over the course of the last few seasons, Alonso looks to be taking the opposite approach as he looks to add veteran leadership via Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

Danny Welbeck, who has played in the Premier League since 2008, is coming off his best season yet after scoring 13 goals for Brighton & Hove Albion. The 35-year-old striker could prove to be a great veteran backup option to Joao Pedro, with the uncertain futures of Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu.

In midfield, Chelsea are now said to be interested in acquiring Jordan Henderson to bolster their midfield options. The former Liverpool captain played in the Premier League last season with Brentford following two seasons across Saudi Arabia and Netherlands. Henderson can leave Brentford on a free transfer, and Chelsea are said to be ahead in the race for the England international.

The main goal for Chelsea this season: Finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
