From 50,000 to 13 million followers: the Cape Verde hero who won the hearts of all football lovers

If, before the 2026 World Cup, the name Tim Payne was synonymous with “viral sensation,” today that title belongs to someone else. The star of the show is Josimar Dias, better known as Vozinha, the veteran Cape Verdean goalkeeper who went from having just over 50,000 followers on Instagram to closing in on 13 million after a performance that has already gone down in World Cup history.

The Cape Verdean goalkeeper became the tournament’s biggest sensation after his brilliant performance against Spain. His saves were crucial in helping Cape Verde achieve a historic result in the national team’s first-ever World Cup match, a performance that earned him FIFA’s recognition as the match’s Most Valuable Player.

The media frenzy was immediate. As the match ended, his social media numbers began to skyrocket. What started as a community of just over 50,000 followers turned into a full-blown digital sensation. As of this writing, Vozinha already has close to 12 million followers, surpassing even Tim Payne, who has 5.9 million following the campaign that made him one of the most popular football players on the internet.

On the field, the statistics back up his sudden fame. Vozinha made seven saves, three of which were considered game-changers in keeping his net untouched against one of the teams tipped as favorites to win the title. His performance was so impressive that international soccer stars were quick to react. Thierry Henry summed up the moment with a powerful statement: “He’s become the sensation of a World Cup in a single game.”

Spain tried to break down the wall all night long, but was met with a memorable performance. Ferran Torres had some of the clearest scoring chances, and on one of them, the ball ended up crashing off the crossbar after the goalkeeper closed down every possible angle. Throughout the 90 minutes, Vozinha held his team together with confidence and poise.

After the match, in what was his 89th appearance for Cape Verde, the goalkeeper expressed his excitement at the moment. “It’s a lifelong dream to be here and help my team. We worked so hard for this moment,” he said. Minutes later, during an interview with Caze TV, he discovered live on air the extent of the sensation he had caused on social media. His surprised reaction quickly went viral.

Later, he shared a message that captured the significance of the night. “A dream come true! Representing Cape Verde on the biggest stage in world football is an indescribable honor. I’m speechless… I just feel pride, gratitude, and a sense of responsibility.” The post has already racked up more than two and a half million “likes.”

Vozinha’s story goes far beyond a standout performance. The goalkeeper also set a new record by becoming the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at a World Cup. Born in Mindelo on June 3, 1986, he built his career far from the international spotlight. Raised by his grandparents, he adopted the nickname Vozinha, which means “grandma” in Portuguese, as a tribute to those he considers essential in his life.

His professional career took him to Cape Verde, Angola, Moldova, Portugal, Cyprus, and Slovakia before returning to Portuguese soccer. He currently plays for GD Chaves, where this season he has appeared in 19 league matches, conceded 23 goals, and kept six clean sheets.

The story took an even more emotional turn with the news that Ana Candida Evora, the goalkeeper’s mother, obtained a visa to travel to the United States and will be able to watch him play in the World Cup. After Cape Verde’s debut, Vozinha had revealed through tears that his mother had been unable to accompany him due to issues related to the visa application process and the cost of the document.

While he was becoming one of the tournament’s biggest breakout stars, she watched the match from São Vicente. Now, after consular services were streamlined to facilitate the visa process, she will be able to be in the stands to support her son in the match against Uruguay in Miami.

Beyond the results and statistics, Vozinha has become one of the most moving figures of the 2026 World Cup. In just one night, he went from being a goalkeeper known to only a few to becoming a figure followed by millions around the globe.
