The Colombian national team endured a night of patience and perseverance. For more than 75 minutes, they faced an inspired Lionel Mpasi, the Congolese goalkeeper who kept the score tied with five outstanding saves in just the first 20 minutes of play.
Just as frustration was beginning to set in for Colombia, Daniel Muñoz stepped up to change the course of the game. In the 76th minute, the defender unleashed a powerful left-footed shot from outside the box that deflected off a defender, changed course, and left Mpasi with no chance, sealing the 1-0 victory and his second goal of the tournament.
With the victory, Colombia reached six points in Group K and secured its spot in the knockout stage. Furthermore, the team remains in control of its own destiny, as a draw against Portugal on the final matchday will be enough to clinch first place in the group.
The African team, competing in its first World Cup in 52 years, once again displayed discipline and resilience following its 1-1 draw in its debut against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, though this time it was unable to avoid defeat.
Meanwhile, Portugal routed Uzbekistan 5-0 with a brace from Cristiano, a result that left the Europeans with four points—two fewer than Colombia and three more than DR Congo.
The Colombian national team, ranked 11th in the world and considered the third-best in South America behind Brazil and Argentina, reaffirmed its strong form following a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in its opening match.
Colombia now aims to finish the group stage as the leader, which would secure a game on July 3rd in Kansas City for the Round of 32.
