The Clásico Regio promised intensity, goals, and another showdown between two of Mexican soccer’s top teams. However, Monterrey and Tigres left much to be desired. The two clubs ended up splitting the points after a 0-0 draw at BBVA Stadium in Matchday 8 of the 2026 Apertura.
The match was marked by a lack of decisiveness from both teams. The Rayados had more possession and sought to take the initiative from the opening minutes. However, they struggled to find openings against a Tigres defense that remained organized.
Monterrey had a few chances in the first half. Lucas Ocampos was one of the first to try his luck, while Orbelín Pineda and Jesús “Tecatito” Corona also attempted to create danger, though neither managed to open the scoring.
On the other side, Tigres opted to sit back and exploit open spaces. One of their clearest chances came near halftime. Ricardo Monreal managed to break into the box and forced Esteban Andrada to make a save to keep the score at 0-0.
The second half didn’t breathe new life into the Clásico Regio either
In the second half, both coaches made substitutions in an effort to change the course of the game. Play remained bogged down in midfield with not much changing. Monterrey ended up dominating possession, recording nearly 63 percent of it, along with 18 shots. Even so, the statistics didn’t translate into goals, and Nahuel Guzmán didn’t have to be the star of the match either.
Just when it seemed the match would end without any major surprises, the most dangerous play came in stoppage time. Orbelín Pineda fired a powerful shot that Nahuel Guzmán parried, and on the rebound, the midfielder himself had another chance with the goal practically wide open. However, the Tigres defense cleared the ball off the line to prevent the goal.
Thus, the score ended 0-0, and neither team managed to claim victory in the “Sultana del Norte.”
A draw that leaves little to show
The result allowed Monterrey to reach 10 points, while Tigres reached 7 points after eight matchdays of the 2026 Apertura. Both teams remain outside the playoff spots, so the split of points does little to solve their problems in the tournament. Furthermore, the draw marked yet another goalless chapter in a rivalry that rarely disappoints in terms of intensity. This time, however, the Clásico Regio ended up provoking more yawns than celebrations.
For Rayados and Tigres, the message is clear: if they want to get fully involved in the fight for the playoffs, they’ll need much more than a close game. They’ll also have to find the back of the net.
