In the 155-year history of the FA Cup Final, few matches have ever been decided by a goal as stunning as this one. Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday at Wembley Stadium, thanks to a moment of pure magic from Antoine Semenyo.
The match offered very little in terms of excitement or clear-cut chances, but Semenyo produced a moment of magic via a spectacular backheel finish in the second half.
The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when Semenyo latched onto a cross from Erling Haaland. Without hesitation, the Ghanian winger connected with the ball well, producing a spectacular finish toward the far post beyond the reach of Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
“It’s happened a couple of times in training, and today it came off perfectly… The ball came straight to me and I had to improvise as quickly as possible,” Semenyo told the BBC after the match. “It’s a great finish, I can’t lie.”
Guardiola’s City Still Chasing Domestic Treble
The victory keeps FA Cup holders Manchester City in contention for a domestic treble after already lifting the League Cup. Pep Guardiola’s side sits second in the Premier League, just two points behind Arsenal with two matches remaining.
With a crucial clash against AFC Bournemouth looming on Tuesday, Guardiola warned that he would not allow his players to celebrate much.
The triumph marks Guardiola’s 20th major trophy in his 10 years with Manchester City. With this victory, City lifted the FA Cup for the eighth time, matching Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur for the third-most titles in competition history.
Chelsea’s Deepening Crisis
The defeat means Chelsea will finish the season without silverware, close to one year after winning the FIFA Club World Cup.
After dismissing two managers since the start of the year, the London club arrived at the final with a rookie on the touchline: McFarlane, an academy coach who was managing just his seventh first-team match. Against the odds, it was an impressive performance from Chelsea and McFarlane, who managed to frustrate Guardiola’s system for much of the match.
Now, with Xabi Alonso’s arrival on the horizon, Chelsea will be hoping to get back on track next season.
