Mexico vs. South Korea Preview: Can the hosts win again?

Uwe Jon Jun 18, 2026 1 min read

Mexico already face perhaps their most high-stakes game in Matchday 2 as a win here would definitely take the hosts towards the knockout stages in a good position. The hosts will undoubtedly have the advantage of having the support of their own people, but this is a South Korea side that has been known for upsets in previous World Cups.

Aside from the backing of the home support, Mexico’s biggest threat comes from their interchangeable positioning, which can easily tear apart defenses as players are forced to come out of positions to cover extra ground. South Korea will also have to maintain a high level of concentration as Mexico is known to be a high-pressure team. The energy from the fans will likely be the 12th man for Mexico in Guadalajara.

Mexico will be missing one of their key defenders in Cesar Montes, who is suspended due to his red card in the opening game vs. South Africa.

One of the reasons why South Korea is so deadly is their ability to break on the counter. With one of their key defenders missing, there could be some susceptibility in transition for Mexico.

With three points each, both teams will be in a good position even if they do not get a positive result tonight.
