MLS Results (July 22): Griezmann scores and Inter Miami spoil Lewandowski’s debut

MLS returned on Wednesday for a full 15-game slate, highlighted by the debuts of Antoine Griezmann and Robert Lewandowski. There were numerous goals across the 15 games, highlighted by FC Cincinnati’s triumph in a thrilling 7-goal encounter, winning 4-3 against Vancouver, with only the match between Toronto and New England ending in a scoreless draw.

7-goal thriller in Cincinnati

Led by a brace from Pavel Bucha, FC Cincinnati stunned Western Conference leaders Vancouver in a 4-3 win. Cincinnati has been one of the best attacking teams in the league this season, and they once again showed their offensive prowess on Wednesday. With 40 goals across 16 games, only Inter Miami (42) have scored more goals this season than Cincinnati. On the other side of the spectrum, they have conceded 40 goals — tied for the most in the league with Sporting Kansas City.

It was another great performance from Evander, who had a goal and an assist, created two chances, and took the joint-most shots (4). For Vancouver, Ryan Gauld scored a brace for his first two goals of the season.

Inter Miami win without Messi

Inter Miami entered their matchup vs. Chicago without Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul, but the defending champions still took care of business against Chicago thanks to a late winner from homegrown midfielder Preston Plambeck. Luis Suarez was the star of the show in Messi’s absence as the Uruguayan legend scored a brace to lift Miami past Chicago and spoil the debut of Robert Lewandowski.

LAFC led by dynamic duo Son and Bouanga

Both of LAFC’s star forwards scored in their 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake to secure the Black and Gold’s third straight win. The win secured the LA club’s spot in third place in the Western Conference, sitting just two points behind Vancouver and San Jose at the top.

Already leading the league in assists (10), Son scored in back-to-back games for the first time this season after also finding the back of the net in last week’s El Trafico. For Bouanga, he scored his team-high 8th goal of the season.

Orlando’s new superstar scored on his debut

Antoine Griezmann had the perfect debut for Orlando, scoring in their 4-0 road win vs. San Jose. His goal was not only a significant moment for Orlando, but also for Griezmann as it was the 300th goal of his club career.

Orlando’s win pushed them to 10th in the Eastern Conference, just two points behind DC United for the final playoff spot.
