The Mexican U-20 national team got off to a strong start on its path to the 2027 U-20 World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In its opening match of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament on Friday, the youth team crushed Antigua and Barbuda 3-0, taking control of Group B from the very first matchday.
A Lethal First Half
The Aztec squad didn’t hold back; from the opening whistle, they suffocated their opponent with ball possession and deep runs down the wings. Their persistence quickly paid off: just 12 minutes in, Hugo Camberos opened the scoring by coolly converting a penalty kick.
Camberos remained the Caribbean defense’s worst nightmare. Ten minutes later (22′), the forward sprinted down the left flank and sent a precise diagonal pass to Francisco Valenzuela, who finished with ease, making it 2-0.
The Tricolor’s dominance continued throughout the first half. After a warning shot by Cristian Inda that hit the post, Santiago Sandoval took advantage of stoppage time (45+2′) to unleash a powerful left-footed strike that sealed the final 3-0 score before halftime.
Control of the Match and a Clean Sheet
In the second half, the Mexican team took their foot off the gas and managed their lead. Although Antigua and Barbuda tried to push forward, the Mexican defense faced no major difficulties. Mexico had chances to make the score even more lopsided, but a lack of finishing touch and a shot by Diego Ramírez that hit the post in the 86th minute prevented the fourth goal.
The final moment of drama came from Mexican goalkeeper Sebastián Liceaga, who in stoppage time (91′) made a monumental save with his opposite hand on a left-footed shot by Sedique Adams, securing the clean sheet for El Tri.
Next stop: Costa Rica
This qualifying tournament is of paramount importance, as it not only awards spots for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics but also determines the qualifiers for the 2027 U-20 World Cup and the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
The Mexican team’s next challenge will be on Monday, when they face Costa Rica. The Ticos are coming in motivated after a 1-0 victory over Guatemala, so this match will determine the outright leader of the group.
