A Perfect Night: Mexico Makes History and Memo Ochoa Retires as a Legend

The Mexican National Team has had a dream group stage. With an offensive outburst in the second half, the Tricolor decisively defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 on Wednesday night, becoming the first team in its history to win all three of its group stage matches at a World Cup.

After a tight first half, Mexico stepped on the gas and sealed the victory in a span of just six minutes. The 22-year-old Mateo Chávez, making his World Cup debut, was the one to break through the European defense in the 55th minute. The fans had barely finished celebrating when Julián Quiñones stepped up in the 61st minute to score his second goal of the tournament and extend the lead.

In stoppage time, Álvaro Fidalgo put the icing on the cake by scoring the decisive third goal, sending the Czech team home eliminated with just one point in three matches.

“El Vasco” Breaks His Own Records

With this nine-point performance, Mexico surpassed its best-ever group stage record (two wins and one draw), feats achieved in the 1986 and 2002 tournaments. Interestingly, Javier Aguirre was present at both tournaments: in the first, commanding the midfield as a player, and in the second, as the master strategist from the bench.

A bridge between the new blood and the legend

The match not only served to solidify Mexico’s undisputed lead in Group A, but also gave us two moments that will go down in the history of Mexican soccer, linking the future with the great legends of the Tricolor:

  • The precocious talent: The promising Gilberto Mora made history by becoming, at just 17 years old, the youngest Mexican player to start a World Cup match.
  • The Master of Six World Cups: In the 77th minute, the stadium rose to its feet to cheer the long-awaited entrance of 40-year-old veteran Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa. With these minutes on the field, the iconic Tricolor goalkeeper joined the ranks of world soccer royalty, tying stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players in history to see action in six World Cups.

The Match Is at the Coloso de Santa Úrsula

As the clear and undisputed winner of its group, Javier Aguirre’s team will return to its home turf, Estadio Azteca, next Tuesday to play its Round of 16 match against an opponent yet to be determined. Mexican hopes are higher than ever.
