Cruz Azul defeated Toluca 3-1 in the 2026 Campeón de Campeones, held in Carson, California, to claim the first official Mexican soccer title of the new season.
The match pitted the champions of the two previous Liga MX tournaments against each other: Toluca, the Apertura champion, and Cruz Azul, the Clausura champion. From the opening whistle, both teams made it clear that the trophy was a priority, delivering an intense match with constant scoring chances.
José Paradela put La Máquina on the board
During the first half-hour, the match was fiercely contested, with both teams trying to dictate the pace but struggling to create clear-cut chances in the final third.
It wasn’t until the 30th minute that José Paradela’s quality shone through. Following a great through ball from Carlos Rodríguez, the midfielder found himself completely alone in front of the goalkeeper and finished with his first touch, firing a shot across the goal that nestled just inside the post to make it 1-0.
The goal rewarded the sky-blue team’s best spell of play, as they began to control the pace of the match.
Alexis Vega responded before halftime
When it seemed Cruz Azul would head into halftime with a slim lead, Toluca reacted with a great set-piece play.
Following a foul near the box, “Canelo” Angulo played a short pass to Alexis Vega, who unleashed a powerful right-footed shot that left goalkeeper Kevin Mier with no chance, tying the score at 1-1 just before halftime.
The tie reignited the excitement in a match that promised a spectacular finish.
Cruz Azul clinched the title in the second half
Cruz Azul once again took center stage in the second half. Another combination between José Paradela and Carlos Rodríguez ended with the Mexican midfielder finishing one-on-one against the goalkeeper to restore La Máquina’s lead at 2-1.
Minutes later came the decisive blow. In the 61st minute, Paradela took a direct free kick that caught goalkeeper Luis García off guard; he was unable to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net for a 3-1 lead.
With that goal, the team coached by Nicolás Larcamón took complete control of the match.
Toluca tried to mount a comeback but couldn’t find a way back into the game.
Coach Antonio Mohamed made substitutions in an effort to cut into the deficit and breathe new life into the Diablos Rojos in the final minutes. Toluca pushed forward and created a few chances, but the Cementeros’ defense held firm and thwarted any attempt at a comeback.
The final whistle confirmed Cruz Azul’s victory and sparked celebrations among players and fans on U.S. soil.
Cruz Azul kicks off the season by lifting a new title
With this victory, Cruz Azul adds another trophy to its collection and confirms its strong run of form after winning the Clausura and now the 2026 Campeón de Campeones.
The performance of José Paradela, who scored two goals and was the star of the match, as well as Carlos Rodríguez’s leadership in midfield, were key factors in helping La Máquina kick off the semester with another title.
The championship also provides a significant morale boost for Cruz Azul as they look ahead to the rest of the season, while Toluca will seek to put this defeat behind them and focus on their upcoming matches in the 2026 Apertura.
