World Soccer.—Neither home-field advantage nor the support of their fans was enough for Rayados de Monterrey to extend their winning streak. The Monterrey-based team fell 0-1 to Chivas in Matchday 14 of the 2026 Liga MX Apertura, in a match marked by rain, missed opportunities, and a controversial finish.

The Rebaño Sagrado took the lead early on and then held off the home team’s attempts to salvage the result. With this victory, Guadalajara took home three valuable points from their visit to BBVA Stadium, known as the Gigante de Acero.

The match also had a special twist with Matías Almeyda’s reunion with Monterrey, although the coach was unable to celebrate against his former team as he would have liked.

Piojo Alvarado Gives Chivas the Lead and Tala Rangel Shines

The scoring opened in the 9th minute. Roberto, better known as “Piojo” Alvarado, capitalized on an assist from Santi Sandoval and fired a shot across the goal to make it 1-0 in favor of Chivas.

Rayados had a chance to respond shortly afterward when Lucas Ocampos stepped up to take a penalty kick. However, “Tala” Rangel made a save to stop the shot and preserve the Rojiblancos’ lead.

The goalkeeper made another standout save by deflecting a header that threatened to find the back of the net. His saves were crucial in helping Guadalajara maintain their lead.

Rain Complicates Things for Rayados, and VAR Denies Them the Equalizer

In the second half, a downpour pounded the stadium as Monterrey desperately sought the equalizer. The home team pressed on, but time and again they were thwarted by the visiting defense.

Chivas also had chances to extend their lead. One of the clearest came on a shot by Diego Campillo that crashed off the crossbar.

Almeyda shuffled his lineup, including bringing on young Paxon Ruffin, in an effort to turn the game around. However, the substitutions weren’t enough to break through Guadalajara’s defensive organization.

The closing minutes still held some drama. Orbelín Pineda was sent off for stopping a counterattack, and during stoppage time, Diego Rossi appeared to have secured a draw for Rayados. However, after a VAR review, the referee disallowed the goal due to a handball on the play.

The decision sparked protests from Monterrey, and after the final whistle, Matías Almeyda was also sent off for his protests toward the officiating crew.

Thus, Chivas left the Gigante de Acero with a narrow victory, while Rayados saw their winning streak snapped on a night when missed opportunities and controversy made all the difference.
