The Mexican national team sent the city of Guadalajara into a frenzy on Thursday with a 1-0 victory over South Korea, officially becoming the first team to secure its spot in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.
This achievement represents a major triumph for the Aztec squad, which has redeemed itself after the bitter disappointment of failing to advance past the group stage at Qatar 2022. Now, fueled by euphoric fans, El Tricolor has a perfect record with two consecutive home victories.
The mistake that decided the match

The match, which remained extremely close throughout the first half, was decided in Mexico’s favor thanks to a dramatic lapse in concentration by the South Korean defense.
In the 50th minute, South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu accidentally collided with his own defender, Lee Gi-hyuk, causing the ball to fall inside the six-yard box. Mexican midfielder Luis Romo read the play perfectly, recovered the loose ball, and calmly slotted it into the open net to score the decisive 1-0 goal.
Raúl Rangel’s Heroic Play

Despite the deficit, South Korea didn’t give up and came within inches of ruining Mexico’s celebration in the final stretch of the match.
In the 87th minute, Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel emerged as the hero with two monumental saves. First, he blocked a powerful point-blank header from forward Cho Gue-sung. Almost immediately afterward, while still on the ground, Rangel stretched out his right arm in a pure reflex move to deflect the follow-up shot, miraculously preventing the ball from crossing the goal line.
Clear Leaders of Group A

With this result, Mexico solidified its position at the top of Group A with a perfect six points after two matchdays. Mexico’s qualification was confirmed hours earlier when the Czech Republic and South Africa drew 1-1 in Atlanta, leaving the group standings as follows:
- Mexico: 6 points
- South Korea: 3 points
- Czech Republic: 1 point
- South Africa: 1 point
It’s worth noting that, under the new expanded 48-team format, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, advance to the newly created and historic round of 32. Mexico has already secured its spot in that stage.
