Guillermo “Memote” Martínez has a new team. In the final hours of the Liga MX transfer window, Tigres finalized the signing of the Mexican forward, who admitted that he didn’t hesitate to accept the club’s offer as soon as he learned of their interest.
Upon his arrival in Monterrey, Martínez explained that one of the reasons for his decision was the stability this move brings to his family, in addition to the athletic challenge of competing for a spot on the team and staying on the Mexican national team’s radar.
“When I heard about Tigres’ interest, I knew I had to come. Because that also provides a lot of stability for my family, and that’s what I was looking for—a commitment and the chance to fight for a spot so I can play and continue to be called up to the national team,” said the Mexican forward.
“El Memote” was part of the Mexican national team that competed in the 2026 World Cup, so he now aims to remain on the roster under Rafa Márquez’s leadership.
His move to Tigres also came at a time when his playing time with Pumas was dwindling under coach Esteban Solari. As a result, the chance to switch teams represented an opportunity the forward didn’t want to pass up.
Martínez also highlighted the importance of joining a club like Tigres, given what it represents both in Mexico and internationally.
“Joining a team like this is always very important, because of everything it stands for. We know what it means in the country, and internationally, Tigres is already well-known to everyone,” he said.
Memote was on América and Cruz Azul’s radar
The Mexican forward was also one of the names mentioned during the transfer window. His profile as a Mexican center forward sparked interest from other major Liga MX clubs.
Cruz Azul and América explored Martínez’s situation, although it was primarily América that approached the player’s camp to inquire about his contractual status.
However, the negotiations never resulted in a formal offer, as América’s front office prioritized signing a foreign forward.
Ultimately, it was Tigres that finalized the signing of Guillermo Martínez, who will now seek to earn a spot in the Tigres attack and continue pursuing his goal of returning to the Mexican national team.
