Happy 39th, Messi! A historic birthday for the eternal captain

Lluvia Zazueta Jun 25, 2026 3 min read

The football world is celebrating, and the hearts of the Albiceleste are beating stronger than ever. Lionel Messi blew out 39 candles this Wednesday, cradling a World Cup that, so far, has brought him nothing but joy. With the Argentine national team—the defending champion—already qualified for the knockout stage, the celebration takes on a historic and legendary flavor: the “No. 10” has cemented his place as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

A family celebration with a taste of home

The star from Rosario celebrated his special day surrounded by his other family—his teammates—at the national team’s training camp in Kansas City, Missouri. Of the six World Cups he has played in, this is the fifth time he has celebrated his birthday in the middle of the tournament, the only exception being that unforgettable 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which was played in the winter.

On social media, Leo shared the warmth of the celebration: a smiling photo with the team and a cake that truly tasted like home, specially prepared by Pan Caliente, a Kansas City bakery owned by a fellow Argentine.

“To the man who changed our lives”

Without a doubt, the most moving moment of the day was the tribute paid to him by his teammates. In a scene that will be remembered forever, the players posed alongside Messi wearing personalized white jerseys. Each jersey was printed with a personal photo of each player hugging their captain, accompanied by a message that gives you goosebumps, shared on social media by Julián Álvarez:

“To the man who changed our lives, gave us unforgettable moments, and made us believe that dreams are possible… The best part wasn’t just seeing it—it was living it with you! Happy birthday, Captain; we love you. May you be immensely happy.”

The World at His Feet and the All-Time Record

Messi’s 39th birthday isn’t just another date on the calendar. It comes during a tournament where his magic remains intact, having scored all of Argentina’s goals to date: a magical hat trick in the opener against Algeria and a crucial brace against Austria. With 18 World Cup goals in his career, he is now standing alone at the pinnacle of football’s pantheon.

The Echo of Love in Rosario

While giants like FIFA, his current club Inter Miami, and Barcelona joined in the global celebrations, the purest and most genuine tribute took place thousands of kilometers away, in the land where he was born. In his hometown of Rosario, around 5,000 children from local schools gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” to him in unison.

It is the perfect illustration of what Lionel Messi represents: beyond the goals, trophies, and unbeatable records, he is the eternal idol who taught an entire country—and the whole world—that the biggest dreams, with patience and love, come true.
