The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition of the expanded format featuring 48 teams, resulting in the knockout phase being extended from 16 to 32 teams. Out of the now 12 groups, the top two seeds automatically qualify for the Round of 32. The remaining spots are filled with the 8 best third-place teams.
