Lucas Herrington becomes the youngest player in MLS history to play at the World Cup

Lucas Herrington, Colorado Rapids center-back, became the youngest player in MLS history to play at the World Cup following his start for Australia vs. Paraguay on Thursday night.

Born in Brisbane, Herrington developed through the youth systems of Taringa Rovers, Toowong FC, and Brisbane City FC before joining the academy of Brisbane Roar in 2019, where he completed his training. He made his senior and professional debut as a starter for Brisbane on September 9, 2024.

On 13 August 2025, Herrington agreed to join the Colorado Rapids ahead of the 2026 season. On February 22, 2026, Herrington made his Major League Soccer debut for the Rapids in the season’s opening match against the Seattle Sounders. The young Australian defender has made 17 appearances for the Rapids, scoring his first goal for the club in their 2-0 win vs. Portland Timbers on February 28.

Herrington was able to represent four countries: Australia, Finland, Germany, and Zimbabwe, but ultimately chose to represent his country of birth, Australia. He made his debut for the senior national team during the March 2026 international break.

Interest in Herrington from European clubs will likely grow after his solid performance on Friday, which helped Australia secure their second clean sheet of the World Cup.

Next up for Australia is a Round of 32 matchup vs. second place of Group G on July 3 in Dallas.
